Jasminum sambac ‘Thai Beauty’

This is a remarkable variety which is originally from Thailand where as those of you who have visited will know has an extremely developed and sophisticated horticultural industry and marketplace; more so in my opinion than any other country in South & SE Asia.

This plant is a tight slow growing pot plant/erect shrub and has irregular and very slightly ‘non opposite’ smaller leaves with wavy edges and of a mid green colour.
The flowers are like a tiered wedding cake with a collar of petals arising from another in a vertical manner. The petals themselves are thick and glaucous and reflexed upwards are inwards like claws.
The flowers are smaller than all other sambac varieties being slightly smaller than the single sambac from S. Asia (form 2) from which I strongly suspect it has some parental link.

The scent is strong and instantly recognisable as Jasmine and typical of the sambac species but it doesn’t have the power of a huge flower of Grand Duke of Tuscany.

I guess the nectaries that produce the scent are noticeably smaller. However the scent is weighty enough and the structure endures it to all who see it. Again easy and much the same treatment will bring rewards.
