Home Jasmin Home Jasminum Officinale A Guide to the Species Jasminum grandiflorum Catalogue
Jasminum adenophyllum
This species is another gem from SE Asia and totally different in flower and in habit. Again it will survive a few degrees or even more of frost depending on the position.

In the winter of January 2006 this species was cut to the ground by -5c (conservative estimate) and in some cases was killed but the majority of plants exposed to the prolonged freeze over several weeks did shoot again from the base just below the soil level.

Thin twining stems with pairs of single deep grey green lanceolate leaves in opposite pairs make this species a true climber. The flowers are produced (In Europe) from mid summer onwards and are very long pointed buds with a long spidery calyx which open to reveal a large spidery flower with slightly wavy petals.

The plant is easily grown and will become quite prolific in filtered light with adequate moisture and can produce long running stems. The typical height when grown in a container is little more than 5-6 ft and makes it ideal for twining up a post or similar support.

In the ground when grown under glass or in a subtropical position such as Southern Europe it will reach 8-10ft when given part shade in a fertile position and is a sight to behold being in flower from early June until October. The scent is light and airy and unmistakably a Jasmine.

The main selling points here are of course, the scent but also the spidery large flower and large leaves and its habit of fast growth and toughness to cold and frost (-2 or -3c for short periods) make this a winner.
